I don't recieve these types of comments that often. Although I do post my some of my art somewhere else too such as basilmarket, I just got a flame from someone on one of my art pieces rofl.
However, I see them so often on other people's artwork. I understand that you do NOT have to be a super talented artist or even have to be one, no one is perfect in this world. But I see people claiming themselves as "critics" but they're actually insulting the artist instead.
Okay, what the hell are those then if claim them to be "criticism?" Ladies and gentlemen, those comments are clearly known as insults NOT criticism.
Definition of insult:
An insult (also called putdown) is an expression, statement (or sometimes behavior) which is considered degrading. Insults may be intentional or accidental. An example of the latter is a well-intended simple explanation, which in fact is superfluous, but is given due to underestimating the intelligence or knowledge of the other. -[link]
"Draw better"
"Improve on the proportions please"
"You need help with art"
Again, what the hell are those? Those aren't specific enough for letting the artist to know what their flaws are for improvement. You didn't let the artist even KNOW what they should improve. Oops! I think I did make the arms a bit too short (even though that they're actually at the average correct length), I think I should extend them to the feet!
Jesus if you're going to critique, then you BETTER know how to critique or even know what it is. Otherwise, if you're going around randomly claiming that you're "criticising" someone's artwork while you're actually insulting them instead, you'll turn out looking like an arrogant idiot instead. :/
"You've done a fine job on drawing the expressions on this. However, I suggest that you should increase the arm length seeing that it is only reaching at the tips of the girl's hips. Other than that, everything looks fine!"
"The landscapery is magnificant in this. Perhaps you could try removing the sign post that's on the side to avoid any sort of distraction next time. The trees around it are very eye catching, keep trying your best for sucessful improvement!"
See the difference? Those are ACTUAL critiques, they may not be the best but the point is clearly given out.
Definition of criticism:
Constructive criticism, or constructive analysis, is a compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism. Having higher experience, gifts, respect, knowledge in specific field and being able to verbally convince at the same time, this person is intending to uplift the other person materially, morally, emotionally or spiritually. -[link]
Kays, want a non-art example? Of course, this isn't directly applied to art but still lmfao.
Honestly, why do you receive comments on your essays, report cards, projects from your teachers at school? They leave criticism on your (insert whatever here) for the intention of HELPING you improve for better sucess in the future (E.g: Suggesting to seek for more help, do more homework, whatever). It's their job to do that.
I agree. Critiques are constructive that help artists improve they way they expect to draw; but insults are the destructive use just to put down the artist and/or his/her artwork. I hate it when people mistake critiques for insults, when really critiques are what are to help the artists. And one of the biggest shortcuts to improvement is to take tutorials. I accept critiques, and it helps me do better with my art.
Yes. And, if I want to draw buildings like houses or hotels or restaurants or cottages or anything, I would need some tutorials on how to draw them. It would take using a ruler to keep them all even.
PLEASE never remove this stamp! I NEED it! People ALWAYS insult my work, claiming that they're "critiquing" it, when it's nothing but rude comments. THIS is SO going on my profile.
That's an interesting way to think about it.
